OBJECTIVE

This competency-based training program Hazardous Areas Design and Planning is designed to equip participants with the skills to
  • design, plan, select electrical equipment in hazardous areas (EEHA) and
  • manage upkeep of the Hazardous Areas Verification Dossier (HAVD).

Target Workforce

The course targets the following professionals:
  • Electrical/Instrumentation engineers
  • Designers
  • Planners
  • EEHA Technicians

Training Content  

The training includes both theory and hands-on practical elements, covering industry procedures and workplace practices. Key topics include:

  • Properties of explosive gases/vapours and combustible dusts

  • Hazardous Area Classification (HAC) procedures for gas and combustible dusts.

  • Explosion-protection (Ex) techniques and Ex equipment selection.

  • Interpreting Ex rated equipment nameplates and Certificates of Conformity.

  • Interpreting the relevant standard: AS/NZS 60079.14:2022 (Ex design, selection, and installation).

  • Developing and collating the Hazardous Areas Verification Dossier (HAVD).

  • Undertaking Ex i entity calculations and Ex e Maximum Dissipation Power (MDP) calculations.

  • Selecting appropriate wiring systems, cables, and cable entry termination systems including earthing requirements.

Participants will be eligible for various units of competency, including:

Eligibility for Design Unit (UEEHA0021)

  • Those holding an Advanced Diploma (AQF level 6) or an Engineering degree (AQF 7) are eigible for ALL units including design.

 

Training Method

The training employs a blended delivery approach:

  • 40% Theory and 60% Practical training.
  • The practical component includes independent design work and group design work.
  • Delivery is Face to Face flexible or remote flexible.
