OBJECTIVE

This is a post-trade professional development course designed to rapidly equip qualified electrical workers and technicians with the essential skills for the high-demand field of Instrumentation and Control (I&C).

The program delivers the core competencies required to select, install, test, and maintain sophisticated process control systems:

Skill Mastery: Sharpen your PLC, HMI, and Process Instrumentation skills.

Industry Access: Gain expertise in HART-compliant systems to access high-value sectors like Oil & Gas and Mineral Processing.

Certification: Log and verify the necessary work experience in installation, calibration, PLC programming, and fault finding for the full qualification.

This qualification provides competencies to select, install, set up, test, fault find, repair and maintain systems and devices for measurement and recording of physical/chemical phenomenon and related process control. Objective includes:

  • To enhance the participants PLC, HMI and Process Instrumentation skills
  • To log and sign off participant’s work experience in the instrumentation installation, calibration, testing, PLC programming and fault finding
  • To give participant’s an edge to enter into the oil and gas or mineral processing industry which uses PLC interfaces with HART compliant field instrumentation.

Target Workforce

All candidates interested in learning or up-skilling their PLC programming, HMI, and HART field Instrumentation skills in calibration, testing and fault finding are encouraged to undertake this post-trade professional development gap training course.

Holding UEE40420- Certificate IV in Electrical – Instrumentation is a PMV entry requirement

  • Professionals seeking to up-skill their PLC, HMI, and HART instrumentation skills.
  • UEE40420 – Certificate IV in Electrical – Instrumentation, preferred but not a bar to entry.

PRE-REQUISITES

All students listed below may be eligible to receive full qualification on completion of the all units of competency specified in the training package https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/UEE31225

Typical cohort of students includes:

  • Holders of unrestricted electrical licence and have completed UEE40420 Certificate IV in Electrical Instrumentation, would need to successfully complete 2 weeks intensive face to face intensive training.
  • Holders of unrestricted electrical licence and but have not completed UEE40420 Certificate IV in Electrical Instrumentation, would need to successfully complete 4 weeks intensive face to face intensive training.
  • Electrical workers and overseas instrumentation technicians and engineers who have extended hands-on experience in electrical, instrumentation and control field installations, would need to successfully complete 2 weeks intensive face to face intensive training.

All students would need to get their requisite 1 year Instrumentation and control experience signed off from the site supervisor(s)..

Training Content

(40% THEORY / 60% PRACTICAL)

Intensive, hands-on training is delivered by industry experts using purpose-built facilities with Siemens/Allen Bradley PLCs and HART-compliant field devices.

Focus AreaCore Competencies
Process ControlAdvanced configuration and commissioning of Pressure, Flow, Level, and Temperature instruments.
AutomationPractical PLC/HMI configuration and programming (digital/analog), testing, and fault diagnosis.
Control OptimizationCalibration of Control Valves and comprehensive PID Loop Tuning.
Field OperationsAdvanced calibration, installation, fault diagnosis, and interpretation of P&ID/Loop Drawings.
Safety & ComplianceExecution of Critical Function Testing (CFT) and documentation verification.

The curriculum is structured around core competency areas:

I. Process Instrumentation & Control

  • Advanced Process Measurement: Configuration and commissioning of core variables: Pressure (suppression/elevation), Flow (Magnetic flow meters), Level (Radar, Ultrasonic, Conductivity), and Temperature (RTD/Thermocouples).
  • Smart Device Configuration: Utilizing HART Modems and Hand-Held Configurators for smart instrument setup and diagnostics.
  • Control Element Deployment: Calibration of Control Valves and operational deployment of Variable Speed Drives (VSDs).
  • Loop Optimization: Comprehensive PID Loop Tuning (Proportional, Integral, Derivative).

II. Industrial Automation Systems

  • PLC and HMI Programming: Practical programming (digital/analog), downloading, testing, and fault finding on Siemens and Allen Bradley PLC hardware and HMI.

III. Field Operations & Safety Compliance

  • Instrument Lifecycle Management: Installation, advanced Calibration, and field Fault Diagnosis.
  • Documentation and Verification: Interpreting and verifying P&ID and Loop Drawings (2-Wire/4-Wire) against installed assets.
  • Safety Critical Testing: Understanding and executing Critical Function Testing (CFT) procedures.

IV. Electrical Fundamentals

  • Electrical Concepts: Analysis of RLC circuits, practical calculation of Power Factors, and accurate determination of Fault Currents.

OUTCOME

A) Full qualification – UEE31225 Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control

The full qualification will be issued to the students who:

  • Candidates who successfully complete both theoretical and practical training including its prerequisites get their requisite Work Experience form (signed off by their work supervisor, which will be verified by PMV), will receive the full qualification.

B) Statement of Attainment (SOA)

This Statement is issued to students who successfully complete one or more units of competency in the training package but do not meet the requirements for a full qualification.

  • Graduates who meet all theoretical, practical, and work experience requirements receive the UEE31225 Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control.
  • A Statement of Attainment (SOA) is issued for successfully completed units if the full qualification requirements are not met.
