Introduction to Instrumentation and Automation

Instrumentation deals with the measurement of process variables like pressure, temperature, flow, etc within industrial facilities and the management of equipment for automated control.

Automation describes a wide range of technologies that reduce human intervention in processes. Human intervention is reduced by predetermining decision criteria, subprocess relationships, and related actions — and embodying those predeterminations in machines.

This work is usually done by Instrumentation technicians or engineers.

Demand for Instrumentation and Control Technicians

Instrumentation Technicians are employed in monitoring and controlling the pressure/temperature/flow/pH of water, oil, steam, acids, air, mineral processing and food processing equipment like boilers, separators, heat exchangers and heat-treating ovens.

Many firms now use automation practices that require highly programmed electronic equipment to do the work that used to be manually performed. Because of the high intensity of how much these automated machines are used, they run into quite a number of problems and need experts to be able to upgrade, alter and fix issues that may arise.

The global need for Electrical instrumentation is on the rise, and analysts project that by 2026, the industry will be worth $106 billion. As the instrumentation market expands, so does the demand for appropriately trained individuals who have undergone the required training. In the coming years, employment for instrumentation technicians after completing the Electrical instrumentation course is expected to grow further.

Why study an Instrumentation and Control Course?

Instrumentation and control courses provide an opportunity to learn several practical applications with knowledge in this field. This includes:

  • Enhance PLC + HMI, Instrumentation and industrial networking skills in configuring, testing, fault finding in multiple loops connected to a live process
  • Enhance digital and analog electronic problem-solving skills
  • Plan and manage instrumentation and control projects
  • Modify, re-design and commission industrial control systems
  • Develop industrial electronics and control projects specification, estimate projects and prepare tender submissions

PMV Instrumentation and Control Courses

PMV training equips students with knowledge and practical exposure in instrumentation and process automation and control. PMV courses provide competencies in process and control to select, install, commission, fault find and maintain electrical and instrumentation equipment.

PMV offers several professional development courses for licensed electricians, electrical engineers, and instrument technicians who have a keen interest in developing their skills in instrumentation and control. PMV training aligns with current industry standards (AS/NZS and IEC), using the latest equipment and technologies. We provide hands-on training is designed to provide experience and confidence to deal with simple and complex instrumentation and control system problems.

We have training centres in Perth, Karratha and Adelaide all fitted with purpose-built instrumentation and control skid reflecting site-based instruments and control systems.

PMV provides UEE50220 – Diploma of Electrical & Instrumentation and UEE61521 – Advanced Diploma of Instrumentation and Control Engineering which opens more doors for the students in areas of instrumentation and control, technical authority and supervisory roles.

UEE40420 Certificate IV in Electrical Instrumentation provides the opportunity to study and practice PLC and electrical instrumentation skills and provides exposure to process instrumentation and control practices being used in the industry. This course is funded in Western Australia, Queensland and South Australia.
