OBJECTIVE

  • This industry endorsed course, derived from the UEP12 Electricity Supply Industry-Generator Sector Training Package and the UET12 Transmission, Distribution and Rail Sector Training Package, is intended for electrical workers and electrical engineers working with HV switchgear in industrial facilities and networks.
  • The High Voltage Switching Operations course has been developed by industry professionals with the experience and expertise to deliver the course in a way that provides participants with the competency to carry out high voltage switching activities safely.

Scope

This course provides real-world examples and practical scenarios to develop the knowledge and skills to safely maintain High Voltage systems.

  • Design and develop safe and accurate switching programs and procedures
  • Switching activities at PMV or client’s high voltage switching training facilities

Target Workforce

This post-trade training is aimed at candidates who perform the role of an authorised High Voltage Switching Operator.

Topics Covered

  • Legislation and standards
  • Electrical hazards and risk management
  • Safety procedures and personal protective equipment
  • Requirements for working in a high voltage area, including safe approach distances
  • Precautions that must be taken when performing high voltage switching
  • Switching program writing
  • Permit procedures

PRE-REQUISITES

  • This course is a post trade training, so a current un-restricted Electrical Licence by any Australian state or territory is required to receive a Statement of Attainment (SoA).
  • A partial Statement of Attainment (SoA) can be issued to a student who has successfully completed one or more units of competency, but does not meet the requirements for a full SoA.
  • All overseas graduates, including non-electricians, will be eligible to receive a Statement of Completion only.

Training Method

The course will take you through theory and practical activities to gain understanding of electrical theory, legislation and risks associated with high voltage systems and equipment to gain the skills to successfully design, write, coordinate and carry out high voltage switching operations.

Real-world switching scenarios will develop your understanding of different High Voltage systems, how to successfully manage the risks, minimise downtime and eliminate mistakes.

You will be assessed on:

  • OHS and Legal Obligation of HV Switching Operations
  • General Electrical Safety
  • Develop a HV Switching Plan
  • Performing HV Switching Operations

OUTCOME

This Statement is issued to a student who has successfully completed one or more units of competency on meeting the prerequisite requirements

Training Content

You will undergo face to face training with hands on practical delivery with industry experienced, qualified Electrical Trainers with real experience in High Voltage.
The course, in line with industry procedures and workplace practices, allows you to experience control room scenarios and hands-on in-the-field switching operations, and aims to:

  • Provide understanding of hazards associated with switching high voltage equipment;
  • Highlight the dangers to personnel and the damage that can occur to equipment if correct procedures are not followed;
  • Provide participants with knowledge of fault levels and how these are affected by the operation of various high voltage equipment;
  • Provide participants with the knowledge to write switching programs to ensure that high voltage equipment can be safely isolated and earthed for access

PMV offers a small size class with flexible training to accommodate difficult rosters / work schedules.

In accordance with Australian Government Health & Safety Regulations for continuing education, as well as industry best practices, PMV recommends that High Voltage Operator competencies are refreshed every 2 to 3 years.

PMV offers HV Refreshing Training which takes 2 Days to complete.
